THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 19:31: “If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” Consider the faithfulness of that man who owned the donkey and colt. All he needed to hear was, “The Lord has need of it” – and he willingly gave. The Lord has given each of us various callings in life (in our homes, in the Church, and in the communities we live in). In each calling we have good work to do which comes from the Lord’s hand. The Lord has need of us in each calling. How is He calling you to generous giving in each of your vocations?

THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS, led by Pastor Lueck and meeting in the church basement at 9:15 a.m. is studying “Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today”.

TODAY’S SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON: “The Bronze Serpent,” is one of the more challenging stories in the Old Testament. Just as the bronze serpent was lifted up to heal and save the Israelites, Christ was lifted up on the cross to heal and save us from sin, death, and the devil. Ask students, “How did God rescue people bitten by the serpent? How does God rescue you?”

TODAY: The Evangelism/Stewardship Board will host a church decorating gathering today. As we prepare the church for Advent/Christmas we will meet after the 10:30 worship service for this Fellowship Event. A lunch of pizza and drink will be provided.

Before we worship we will once again have meals served beginning at 5:30 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex to help prepare and serve the meal each week. This week’s free-will Offering will go to the Hilbert family and their work with Lutheran Bible Translators.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Isaiah 51:6: “For the heavens vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment.” The things of this earth that hold our attention, that cause us worry, that tempt us away from the Lord: they are all passing away. They will vanish like a garment. They are not for us to worry over, but rather to use for the Lord’s purposes. The things of this world are not ends in and of themselves, but only means to be used wisely by the children of the Kingdom that has no end.

THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS, led by Pastor Lueck and meeting in the church basement at 9:15 a.m. is studying “Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today”.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL students will study “Worship in the Tabernacle.” In the tabernacle, God dwelled with His people, cleansing them and making them holy through the blood of sacrifices. In Christ, God now dwells among us, cleansing us and making us holy through His blood, sacrificed for us on the cross. Ask students, “Why did God direct the people to build the tabernacle? Where do we worship God today?”

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Hebrews 10:14: “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” Our Lord Jesus has provided the one offering for sin. What we offer to the Lord is not a sacrifice for sin; we cannot buy our way into heaven with our money, works, or effort. Rather, what we give to the Lord’s work in the Church is a thank offering, a sign of our dependency on God and all He has given us.

THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS, led by Pastor Lueck and meeting in the church basement at 9:15 a.m. is studying “Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today”.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL: The account of God giving “The Ten Commandments” to Moses is today’s Sunday School lesson. The children will learn that the law was given through Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. Talk about God’s laws and how they guide us and show us our sin when we cannot keep them. Ask your children, “Who kept the Law perfectly for us?” Though we sin much, daily we have God’s forgiveness because of Christ, His Son.

TODAY is Good Shepherd’s Annual Voter’s Meeting. It will be held after the 10:30 worship service. Good Shepherd will provide the meat and drink and members will bring other food items which excite their taste buds. Copies of the 2016 Proposed Budget and the 2016 Slate of Candidates are in the narthex.

NEXT SUNDAY is the deadline for items to be submitted for the DECEMBER NEWSLETTER. Mandy Kluender is our Editor for the church newsletter and any announcements you want to be published in the Newsletter should be submitted to her at mgkluender@hotmail.com or you may call her at (309) 838-9868.

Bulletin Announcements †

November 8, 2015

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Mark 12:44: “For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”   From Old Testament times right through to today the Lord has urged us to give to His work in the Church in proportion to how He has blessed us. He has also called us to sacrificial giving, that is, giving that actually costs us something. That’s the shape of true Christian generosity.

THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS, led by Pastor Lueck and meeting in the church basement at 9:15 a.m. is studying “Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today”.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL: “God Provides Manna, Water, and Quail” is the Sunday School lesson for today. Just as God provided manna, water, and quail for the hungry and complaining Israelites to preserve them, in Christ, God feeds us with the manna of His Word and the water of forgiveness, satisfying our eternal hunger and quenching our eternal thirst. Consider discussing, “How does sin cause us to be lost and hungry and thirsty for what we cannot have?” Talk about Jesus, the bread of life and the living water, and how He satisfies our spiritual hunger and thirst.

TODAY: Following worship today members of the Evangelism/Stewardship Committee will be handing out to each member a Commitment Card and envelope. Please fill them out and bring them back on Stewardship Sunday, November 15th. If you have not done so, last year’s envelopes are on the table in the narthex for your pick-up.

TODAY is our monthly Offering for our seminary student Bradley Ferch. Bradley is a student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Bradley sent Good Shepherd a letter which is posted on the bulletin board.

FOOD COLLECTION: Our Food Collection for the Home Sweet Home Mission will continue through TODAY. Members of our congregation will deliver the food and serve a meal at the Mission on Saturday, November 14th.

THE LUTHERAN HOUR: “Readied For That Time” is the topic for next Sunday. The sermon text will be from Mark 13:1-13. Our most advanced technology soon becomes worthless and obsolete, but God has a life for you in Jesus that lasts forever. The speaker will be Reverend Gregory Seltz. Hear this Sunday’s message on the Lutheran Hour on WGN (720) at 6:00 a.m.; WJWR (104.7 FM) and WJWR (90.3 FM) both on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. Also, if you can receive Lincoln, IL radio station WLLM (1370 AM) the program is broadcast two times on Sunday at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tune in! THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  “With angels, archangels, and with all the company of heaven….” When we gather around the altar of the Lord in His House we pray and praise God with “all the company of heaven.” Those we have lost in the Lord are not truly lost to us – they have simply entered their rest with the Lord. As we gather to worship our Lord, we gather along with them. On the Last Day everything that God has given into the care of our stewardship will fade away – everything except our brothers and sisters in Christ. Caring for one another in love and grace is our highest calling.

THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS, led by Pastor Lueck and meeting in the church basement at 9:15 a.m. is studying “Lutheran Doctrine and Practice Today”.

TODAY IN SUNDAY SCHOOL, the children will learn about how God saved the Hebrews by parting the waters in “Crossing the Red Sea.” Ask your children to tell you what they know about this story. Talk about, “How does God fight for us and save us from sin, death, and the devil?” Discuss Baptism and how water combined with God’s Word washes you clean from sin and gives you eternal life.

THIS TUESDAY, November 3rd, Good Shepherd and Pastor Lueck will be hosting the Bloomington South Circuit Pastor’s Conference. This will be going from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

NEXT SUNDAY, November 8th, will be our monthly Offering for our seminary student Bradley Ferch. Bradley is a student at Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

NEXT SUNDAY: Please pick up your Stewardship Envelopes from this past year on the table in the narthex. Next Sunday, November 8th, the Stewardship Board will hand out the new envelopes and we will bring them back to be dedicated to the Lord on Stewardship Sunday, November 15th. Thank you.

FOOD COLLECTION: Our Food Collection for the Home Sweet Home Mission will continue now through NEXT SUNDAY, November 8th. Members of our congregation will deliver the food and serve a meal at the Mission on Saturday, November 14th.

THE LUTHERAN HOUR: “Do You Know THIS Jesus?” is the topic for next Sunday. The sermon text will be from Hebrews 9:24-28. If you think Jesus is just one of those very good and capable people who show us a better way to treat others, you haven’t really captured who Jesus is. The speaker will be Reverend Gregory Seltz. October 25, 2015

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Romans 3:20: “For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.” The Law of God is good – it’s just that we sinners cannot save ourselves by the Law. Salvation is a free gift of God because they only way we could ever be saved. The Law shows us God’s holiness and thus our own sin. And now in Christ we can look at the Law and see it in a new light as well: as a guide for how to live a godly life in thanksgiving to God for His gracious forgiveness in Christ.

TODAY we welcome Rob Hilbert from Lutheran Bible Translators. Mr. Hilbert will speak briefly after each worship service and conduct class for all ages in the basement during our Sunday School hour. We will have a door Offering for Rob and his family. The Hilbert’s were called back from serving in Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak. Rob, wife, Mical and children are now preparing to serve in Botswana. Lord’s blessings on their work!
